frequently asked questions

Before your shoot

what should i know about my portrait session?

Your experience starts with an inquiry, then you'll hear from me within 24-72 hours to book a consultation. This is where we discuss our plans, ideas, and work through any questions you might have. Leading up to our shoot, you'll receive more information about how to prepare, like what to bring, and things to keep in mind.

My portrait shoots are curated and we will work within your chosen theme to create an experience and photographs that are uniquely yours. Though I offer specific concepts, each are a reflection of your ideas, interests, and comfort levels - not all sessions need to explore the same themes or be styled the same way. Ultimately, the goal is for us both to have fun being creative and end up with really cool, one of a kind works of art that stand out from the rest.

Portrait session location, clothing, & hair/makeup services

My sessions are "bring your own" hair and makeup, though we will work together for styling, touch ups, and adding any special effects like face or body paint, fake blood, headpieces, and similar.

For clothing, we will agree on the plan ahead of time. Sometimes bringing your own is the best bet because we know what fits you, but we will discuss this in our consultation. Clothing that is more revealing (e.g. lingerie) and nudity or implied nudity is always up to the adult (19+) client's comfort level and consent. I firmly believe a body is a body and all are wonderful and deserve celebration, and this is an artistic choice we decide on together, fully informed, and with zero pressure.

For locations, I am an "on location" photographer - prepared to be photographed outdoors or at an agreed-upon location. In lieu of a dedicated studio space, you can come to my scenic property, I come to you, or we choose a place together. If we choose an indoor space, I have a mobile lighting and backdrop set up that I bring with me. It is important to note that rental of any desired space is the responsibility of the client, but I am more than happy to help with research and location scouting as part of our planning process.

Payment process & policies

After I receive your inquiry, I’ll send you a custom quote so you know exactly what to expect for your total. At minimum, I require a retainer of 50% of the total cost to secure your date for both portrait sessions and events. Your retainer is non-refundable and is put toward your total cost.

Additional fees you might incur depend on the location of your shoot and the complexity of coordinating logistics and other production details, like rentals and mileage. All of this will always be discussed in our consultation, clearly laid out in our contract, and coordinated only after your contract is signed! However, if unexpected overtime is incurred, this will be billed out as per our contract.

I’m more than happy to set up a payment plan, so please let me know if that would work best for you. You will just need to pay your invoice in full prior to receiving your photo gallery. I’m able to accept e-transfer, cash, or card and PayPal through my website.

Rescheduling policies

  • Your 50% retainer is your non-refundable booking fee to secure your date. It can be transferred to a new date once if notice is given more than 24 hours in advance. If you require rescheduling a second time, you will lose your retainer and will be required to submit another should you wish to book again.
  • No shows or outright cancellations with the 24 hour window will not be refunded any monies paid.
  • Exceptions are made for illness if you need to cancel within 24 hours.
  • If I have to cancel or reschedule for any unforeseen circumstance, I'll let you know as soon as possible and do whatever I can do reschedule. If we can't make rescheduling work under those circumstances, you'll be refunded completely.

Are portrait sessions just for one person?

Nope! I welcome multiple models for these sessions - whether that's your partner, your pet, a friend, or a group of friends. This will affect your price depending on how many people/animals are being photographed. You are also welcome to bring one other adult with you as a helper or your service animal which will not affect the cost of the shoot (no children please.)

Do you offer other photography services, like couples, family, or branding shoots?

While I'm grateful for everyone who has trusted me with these types of photos in the past, I am no longer offering the following:

  • Couples (unless you are bringing someone to a portrait shoot)
  • Individual portraits like boudoir or grads
  • Family photos
  • Corporate headshots, branding, or product photos

I will happily take on small weddings or elopements by request.

Do you travel?

Sure do! I use the CRA website to calculate mileage and other expenses. Travel fees typically apply outside of Quesnel, unless I have a specific location I have chosen on our behalf for portraits. If we're flying, the cost of my flight to and from the destination and accommodation is the responsibility of the client; however, if the option to drive or fly apply to our destination, the most cost- and time-effective option will be chosen and you'll see that appear in your invoice. We'll cover all this ahead of signing a contract. I will be 100% transparent on these costs as I never intend to make money off of charging travel fees - the goal is just to cover my own expenses, which makes it possible for me to be there. I've photographed all over Canada and the US - let's go on an adventure!

Do you offer discounts?

You bet! I offer discounted rates for the following:

  • Model calls - stay up to date on my Instagram & here on my website
  • First responders & veterans
  • Charitable or non-profit organizations

All you have to do is inquire!

image licensing

Blacksheep Portraits retains full copyright of all images. Images will be licensed for commercial use at the rates specified and agreed upon in our contract.

How long does it take to get our photos?

I aim for maximum 4 week delivery window, depending on the session, how many photos are expected, if you added video to your portrait package, among other factors. I am always happy to do my best to accommodate your deadlines and discuss same-day delivery for events.

Do you offer albums or prints?

Yes! Physical products are made available through my shop when you receive your gallery.

Generative AI policies

I do not use generative AI in any of my artwork or editing. I believe art should be made ethically, with consent, by humans, for humans. I'd rather take the time to meticulously select your images and make edits by hand even if it takes me longer to do so.

privacy policy

I will only share photos that you consent to be shared. I will provide you with a model release where you can choose to share all or some of your images on my socials and my website. I'm super grateful if you let me post your images, but completely understand if you don't want that! If you choose to share your images, I would love to be tagged - it truly makes any photographer's day when this happens!

You will receive your images by email. Outside of our correspondence regarding your photoshoot and images, I won't contact you by email unless you specifically consent to it.

What about alterations or retouching?

The extent of my retouching is removing a stray hair, tags, or sometimes a blemish. I do NOT alter your body in any way. If you desire extensive retouching, I'm either not the photographer for you, or you can request this at a rate of $250 per hour of extensive retouching.

Making additional edits or alterations to your images is not permitted, including running images through an AI program. Sometimes social media crops things in a weird way, and that is totally understandable - I struggle with this too.
